Thank the Lord for being able to bake bread at home because if you are in Colorado, there is no bread in sight! Hey guys and welcome back to another bread post. Today’s post is a staple in my kitchen as we have been making our own bread now for quite some time. I have learned to incorporate the baking of bread into my daily and weekly routine and thankfully so because bread is nowhere to be found in the grocery stores right now. I can’t even find yeast anymore which is kind of alarming because half of the stuff I bake requires yeast. Thankfully I have found a roundabout solution to the yeast problem that I might share later down the road. ????
This white sandwich bread recipe is just a great one to have on hand if you like making your own bread at home or even if you want to get into the habit of baking more at home. It is so easy in my mind I say why not? I feel like that should be my life’s slogan because I say “why not?” to practically every situation I find myself in and bread baking is no exception! Bread recipes are some of the most popular recipes that I post on my site and I want to obviously give my readers (you!) more of the content that they like so here is a basic white sandwich bread recipe that is pretty easy to make and straight forward. It won’t be like the bread you might find at the bread counter at Whole Foods because those types of bread take days to make and multiple steps but this is a great recipe if you are again looking for something that doesn’t take multiple days to make and you can have fresh bread to enjoy that same afternoon or evening depending on when you choose to make this recipe. This is a great stepping stone to more advanced recipes!
I have also allowed this bread to proof overnight which creates, in my opinion, a more flavorful loaf and I love that I can just hop out of bed, dump the dough on a floured counter, do some kneading, allow it to do one final proof and throw it in a preheated oven. Simple yet delicious is the theme in this post and I think we need more of that in our life because- let’s just admit it things are way too damn complicated sometimes! I hope you enjoy this white sandwich bread recipe and let me know if you have decided to start making your bread at home during this wacky time. After all, being more self-reliant is never a bad thing!
White Sandwich Bread
Equipment
- Bowls
- Bowl scraper
- Bench scraper
- Sheet tray
- Scale
Ingredients
- 2 1/2 Tsp. Yeast, active dry
- 1 Tbsp. Sugar or honey
- 3 Cup warm water
- 2 Eggs
- 1 1/2 Tsp. Salt
- 6-8 Cup AP Flour
Instructions
- Begin by preheating your oven to 400 F and greasing a loaf pan. Place yeast, warm water, and sugar/honey into a bowl of a stand mixer and cream yeast. Add in eggs and continue to mix together until dispersed. Add in AP flour and salt lastly, until you have a relatively stiff dough. Knead the dough for 5 to 10 minutes or until the dough slaps the side of the bowl.
- Cover the bowl with a cloth or plastic wrap and allow to proof for 2 hours or until doubled in volume. Once the dough has completed a full proof, press the dough down into a square and then roll it into a log as you would with cinnamon rolls. Pinch the ends of the dough together so the dough wont unravel and then place it into your greased loaf pan and allow to proof for another hour or so, seem side down. Paint the top of the loaf with egg wash and allow to bake for 20 minutes or until nice and golden brown. Allow the loaf to cool for a couple minutes before dumping out the loaf onto the counter and allowing it to fully cool before cutting.
Until next time, happy baking!
