Hello everyone and welcome back to another post on My Daily Knead! I am really excited about this post because I never thought I could make my own vanilla extract until I started researching the topic. I was so frustrated because I was blowing through vanilla extract like CRAZY. I looked into buying the vanilla paste that they sell online but it was super expensive. I then just googled “vanilla beans” and I found this awesome store on Etsy that sold large quantities of vanilla beans much cheaper than you can find in any store. I spent almost $10 on one vanilla bean at Whole Foods! How crazy is that??? Instead through Vanilla Bean Kings, I spent around $35 for 10 vanilla beans.
If you would like to check out their website I will leave a link right here! They also offer wholesale prices for bloggers and home bakers that I am definitely going to look into. The shipping through their Etsy store was also a very pleasant experience. I placed my order at 10 PM and they shipped it the next morning before I even left for work which is pretty impressive in my book. I received my vanilla beans two days later with a follow-up email making sure my order was as expected. Great customer service for sure.
I plan to document the “life span” of my vanilla as it develops over the next three months. I am so excited to see how it turns out. If you would like to follow along and make your own vanilla extract make sure to share your progress with me either in the comments on this post or you could also tag me in your post on Instagram using @mydailyknead.

How to Make Vanilla Extract
- 2 Cups Vodka or your choice of alcohol Make sure to use a alcohol with a high proof. Atleast 70%
- 3 Vanilla Beans, whole
- Another super easy but super fun recipe coming at ya! All you have to do to make your very own vanilla extract is to first measure out your alcohol and pour it into a tall glass container. I chose to use a tall mason jar I actually got on my travels in Hawaii but you can use whatever works for you. I would suggest not to use a porous container though.
- Cut your vanilla beans in half and leave about 1/4 inch of vanilla bean pod still in tact. Place them into your alcohol and screw lid on tightly. Make sure to leave the vanilla bean seeds in the pod to add that extra depth of flavor and to have those beautiful speckles in your baked goods! Let the vanilla marinate for 3 months before removing the vanilla beans and testing the flavor. Enjoy!
